The events leading up to the Civil War are part of one of the most intensely studied periods in British history. The Early Stuarts considers the domestic and foreign policies of James I and Charles I in the years between 1603-40 and asks if Civil War was inevitable by 1640. One feature of the period which has previously been neglected is the 'british' aspect and events in Scotland and Ireland are given detailed consideration.
