The Forty-Five and the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie form one of the most romantic episodes in our history, and have been the subject of innumerable accounts. Less familiar, but equally fascinating, were the Prince's long and melancholy years of subsequent exile in Rome, in which the handsome, spirited hero degenerated into a portly drunkard.
